Have you noticed the Mosquitos are already out! Here is a homemade trap to help keep you and the kiddos from being a blood donor!!!

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP:
Items needed:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1 2-liter bottle

HOW:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

Public...

photographersforummagazine:

Vivian Maier: Private Life. Public Eye.

She washes the last of the breakfast dishes, gives the children a quick goodbye kiss on the cheek, slings her camera around her neck and heads out the door. It’s another overcast Saturday in a northern Chicago suburb as nanny and housekeeper Vivian Maier takes the train once again into the city.

Or so we imagine.

The only things we know for sure, so far, about this woman come from some of the children she took care of, in their recollections decades later; her brief obituary; and clues from possessions she left in delinquent storage lockers. Most memories and death notices eventually recede into obscurity. That could have happened with Maier’s storage locker contents, too, if not for a curious Chicago real estate agent. At a private auction in 2007, John Maloof took a chance on a cardboard box full of then-anonymous black and white negatives that he’d only quickly thumbed through (and almost didn’t bid on) before slapping down $400 for them.

In other hands, this find might have ended up in a Dumpster; instead, Vivian Maier’s images have deluged the international news, gone viral online and drawn throngs to galleries. The mastery of Maier’s photographs and the mystery surrounding her artistic motivations have won her world renown. This reserved, unconventional, independent and liberal woman has shifted the historical ground of street photography and shaken up an ethical controversy: what happens when someone’s private artistic expression hits the public eye posthumously, without that person’s consent?

In Chicago, New York and Paris, and in dozens of countries from the 1950s to the 1990s, Maier pointed her camera out the windows of buses and buildings, onto storefronts and from rooftops, down sidewalks and in traffic, through doorways and into mirrors, across farmers’ fields and mountain lakes. She rarely showed her photos to anyone, and never exhibited or published them.

Here’s a woman who kept her distance from others. Yet, “These pictures are very personal,” says photographer Rodger Kingston, a collector of vintage, vernacular photography in Belmont, Massachusetts. He continues:

They’re much like family photographs. She didn’t have a family, but it seems like she made the streets her family. She captured a certain intimacy in the small gestures, signs and scenes that you usually see only in photographs made in the structure of a tight community. She’s caught things you can only get if you’re out there often and for a long time, ready for them to happen. I think she has a powerful sense of humanity, and she puts it out there in a way that you can see beneath the surface to the real nature of the situation. She makes me care about the people in her pictures.

COURTESY OF THE JEFFREY GOLDSTEIN COLLECTION & JACKSON FINE ART—ATLANTA

On that day in 2007, Maloof bought between 30-40,000 of Maier’s negatives: street scenes, self-portraits, landscapes and urban landmarks. They now join over 50,000 more negatives that he has purchased from other collectors, 2,000 rolls of film, 3,000 prints and numerous color slides in what he has since named the Maloof Collection (www.vivianmaier.com), the largest repository of Maier’s work. Maloof also owns many of her possessions, including a half-dozen cameras, audio recordings, over 100 homemade films, art books, newspaper clippings she had saved and knickknacks. Several steamer trunks and boxes in his attic brim with Maier’s baggy overcoats, felt hats and the men’s shoes she wore.

“My mother fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was. I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.

joedoe:

I’ve typed and retyped this but haven’t found an easy way to say it, nor did I ever think i would have to- my best friend of over 7 years is dying of cancer.

Steven was diagnosed on April 13th and had emergency surgery to remove the cancerous tumor while I was on a work trip in California. He’s since learned that, at the young age of 24, this aggressive cancer has spread to his lymph nodes and possibly other parts of his body including his lungs. He has a second major surgery planned for May 24th, where they will remove his lymph nodes.

Let me explain why I’m writing you all- unlike myself he doesn’t come from an large, generous family with the resources to help if one of us is in need. Because of this I am his emergency contact and have been for years and I feel it’s my responsibility to help him figure out a way to pay for his treatments during this scary and stressful time.

His insurance has said they will not pay for his $20,000 vital surgery on May 24th, a mere 16 days away. And because of his lack of funds, no collateral and past medical history, the hospital is requiring him to pay $10,000 before the surgery and $10,000 post-surgery. His doctors have also informed him that he will have intensive chemotherapy over the next few months which will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, on top of regular doctor visits and expensive medicine.

He’s contacted many cancer organizations for help, reached out to countless charities, and has not found a way to raise the money quickly enough, so we’ve started a fundraiser online hoping to be able to pay for this next surgery before it’s too late.

Steven has been a major part of my life for over 7 years- we’ve worked together at three jobs (we’re both currently at The 88), traveled the country together, and have shared more memories than I could possibly recount. He has been there for me no matter the situation- happy, sad, or difficult, always with a positive outlook and words of wisdom wise beyond his years. He is simply one of the most generous, humorous, and interesting people I’ve ever met and someone I can’t imagine being removed from my life.

Please make this easier for him and myself, donate what you can and share this with your friends, your coworkers, your family, anyone who will donate a few dollars. Anything is appreciated. http://www.giveforward.com//fundraiser/j7c2/fuckcancer

A quick break between subways, but it’s for an important cause. Plus, he lives in New York where subways are a big part of the city.

Tip for all my student readers: if you’re too lazy to use a bibliography creator like NoodleBib or RefWorks, let Google generate your bibliography entries for you. All you have to do is google the article/book title in Google Scholar, click “cite” at the bottom of the search result, and copy either the MLA, APA, or Chicago cite into your word document.

The Avengers as Avenging Angels

I am FINALLY going to reblog this so I don’t have to keep looking for it every time I want to see it.

"Every time I look back to this photo, I feel uncomfortable — it haunts me. It’s as if they are..."

“
Every time I look back to this photo, I feel uncomfortable — it haunts me. It’s as if they are saying to me, we are not a number — not only cheap labor and cheap lives. We are human beings like you. Our life is precious like yours, and our dreams are precious too.

They are witnesses in this cruel history of workers being killed. The death toll is now more than 750. What a harsh situation we are in, where human beings are treated only as numbers.

This photo is haunting me all the time. If the people responsible don’t receive the highest level of punishment, we will see this type of tragedy again. There will be no relief from these horrific feelings. I’ve felt a tremendous pressure and pain over the past two weeks surrounded by dead bodies. As a witness to this cruelty, I feel the urge to share this pain with everyone. That’s why I want this photo to be seen.
”

-
Photographer Taslima Akhter on her haunting photograph of two victims amid the rubble of a garment factory building collapse in Savar, near Dhaka, Bangladesh.

(via timelightbox)

Click that link. This is a picture that needs to be seen just as badly as the endless failures of global capitalism, which encourages and necessitates the conditions that made this happen, need to be seriously addressed.

(via mohandasgandhi)

note that TIME is only sharing the photo online and in the international print edition. TIME has frequently done the same kind of thing in the past with their cover stories, giving the US readers a far softer version of the news than is presented elsewhere.

so I find it interesting that the quote they choose to share from the photographer is about how the photo needs to be seen, and yet by their design, the people who need to see it most, who are most insulated from the reality that the photo represents — Americans — are the ones least likely to see it.
